Aullwood Audubon Outreach Assembly: It’s Wild Out There!

Through the use of music, humor, puppets and audience participation, Chris Rowlands, Aullwood’s Outreach Naturalist, creates a woodland adventure enabling children to encounter a myriad of fascinating wild animals. Children learn about specific adaptations of animals such as a spray of a striped skunk, the stealth flight of a barred owl, or the absence of feathers on a vulture’s head. Children discover the diversity of wildlife and explore a forest food web. With puppet in hand, Chris introduces children to threatened neo-tropical birds – how, when and why they winter in Latin America and why these birds migrate to Ohio to raise their young.

Access to electricity is needed. The program is 45-60 minutes in length. The cost of this exploration is $300 regardless of the number of participating students up to the maximum allowable, so cost per student will vary. There will be additional costs for mileage at 0.75 per mile if your school district is located more than 15 miles from Aullwood Audubon.

This exploration can help to develop skills for the discovery of the physical and behavioral traits of living things. Students will learn about a creature’s basic needs and adaptations, including why certain physical and behavioral characteristics improve their chances of surviving in specific environments. It can be used to expand on spatial thinking and skills by mapping and graphing places and locations that have distinct characteristics needed by the various species. This exploration can connect concepts shared between music and other curricular subjects.
